Obituary

Arthur Monroe Skauge: July 9, 1944 - May 29, 2026

Art was born in Monroe, Louisiana; spent most of his childhood in Shakopee, MN; graduated high school in Lubbock, TX; earned his B.A. at St. Olaf College, and after graduation married Janice L. Olson on September 1, 1966. Art served in the USAF from 1966-1970, spending most of his USAF career serving as a Launch Control Officer at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY, where their daughters Kristin and Karin were born. In 1970, Art and family moved back to Minnesota; Art earned his MBA at the U of MN and began a career in finance and commercial real estate. In 1982, Art accepted a CFO position in Fargo, ND. Then in 1997, Jan and Art returned to Burnsville, MN to be near their quickly growing family.

Although Art earned designations which could put initials after his name, the only title that counts for eternity is one he didn't earn but was freely given: "Child of God" (John 1:12), and his relationship with his Lord was the focus of his life and gave direction to all the rest. He was husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, and so much more. In all these relationships, his heart was to honor the Lord and love others.

Art loved his family and cherished time with family and extended family. Some of the family's favorite memories are of times at the Wisconsin lake home of Jan's parents. Art loved to read, rock hunt, play games, and attend his children's and grandchildren's events and activities. He also enjoyed serving at church, participating in men's Bible study groups, working in the yard, having lunch with friends, and encouraging Jan to fulfill her passions. In the last two decades, Art and Jan found great joy in visiting Israel 10 times, always longing for one more visit there.

Art is survived by his wife of 60 years (minus 3 months); daughters Kristin (Dave) Gerton and Karin (Paul) Anton; 6 grandchildren: Sarah Gerton, Rachel Gerton, Ben Gerton (Pauline Ferre), Hannah (Clay) Beauvais, John Anton, and Kristin Anton; and by 3 great-grandchildren: Joseph Beauvais, Bailey Louise Beauvais, and Baby Girl Gerton/Ferre (due in October); by his sisters, Laura, Ann, and Karen Skauge, and by sister-in-law Susan (Brooke) Taney and their family.

Art is remembered as being honest, hard-working, loyal, gentle, quiet, generous, patient, humble, and always wanting the best for others. He often surprised people with his subtly humorous comebacks. He is also remembered for his courageous and God-honoring navigation of cancer that was expected to take his life (2002), a radiation necrosis brain injury (2007), a serious concussion and brain bleed from a fall in Israel (2014), and finally a severe traumatic brain injury (2023), which drastically changed his life. Yet he never once complained; instead, he persevered with grace and a peaceful countenance, wanting God to be glorified in his life journeys.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, June 13th at Berean Baptist Church, 309 County Road 42, Burnsville, MN 55306.  Visitation begins at 10:00 am, followed by the service at 11:00 am with a lunch reception afterward.
