Beverly Joyce
Spanie
Oct 24, 1930 — Feb 4, 2025
Prior Lake
Beverly Joyce Spanie (Askelson) was born October 24, 1930. She entered Heaven on February 4, 2025 at the age of 94 while residing at Suite Living Prior Lake Assisted Living. Bev was born to Martin and Hilma Askelson in Duluth, MN. She often talked about the fun times she and her 4 siblings and their friends had while growing up, stating those were some of the best years of her life. Her summers were often spent in Edmore, ND on the farm where her parents originated from. She attended Bryant Elementary, Lincoln Jr and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in1948. After high school, she began working at Bell telephone as an operator. She then met Ben Spanie and they were married on May 29, 1952 in Duluth. They had 2 children, Steve and Cheryl. Ben died on March 23, 1969. Bev went on to lead a productive life, continuing on with her jobs at Gershgols and M & J Super Valu as a cashier. Her last employer was Sears where she began in the Maintenance Agreement department, later transitioning over to selling vacuum cleaners and sewing machines. She was a good sales person (earning numerous sales awards) and enjoyed her job, retiring at the age of 69. She was a member of The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity in the West End and faithfully attended and served there for many years until they merged with Zion and Bethany. Bev was also an active member of the Duluth Lioness Club during her working years, especially enjoying their conventions. She moved from Duluth to Burnsville, MN at the young age of 80, to be closer to family. Bev was a hard worker who loved her family, shopping, baking, cleaning and loved being on the go as much as possible as well as travelling to Florida until her health limited this. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Joane (Sig) Hammer, Margaret (Herb) Lien, Marty Askelson and Howie Askelson. Recently, she has been mourning the loss of her family and was awaiting being together again.
She was also preceded in death by husband Ben, Daughter-in-law Mary Spanie and grandson Bryan Stovern.
Bev is survived by son Steve (Dawn) North Fort Myers, FL, daughter Cheryl (Skip) Stovern Prior Lake, MN. Granddaughters Melissa Plotner Apple Valley, MN, Niki (Scott) Wegler Duluth, MN. Kristy (Rob) Wosick Ardoch, ND and Katy (Dan) Swenson, Edina MN. Great Grandchildren Sydney and Carter Wegler, Savanna Plotner, Stacy and Sophy Swenson and Stella and Ava Wosick, Sister-in-law Luz Askelson Lakewood CO and Pat Askelson Kirkland WA and several nieces and nephews.
We are thankful for her life and we will miss her. Our family wishes to thank the phenomenal staff at Suite Living and Grace Hospice.
May she rest in peace in the presence of God, along with those she loved that have gone before her.
