Christopher Scott
Hoins
Aug 10, 1970 — Jul 15, 2026
Lakeville
Christopher "Chris" Scott Hoins, 55, passed away on July 15, 2026.
Chris was born on August 10, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was adopted by Jerome and Lyne Hoins and grew up in Waverly, Iowa. He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1988. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned a degree in Accounting, became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 1995, and later completed his Master of Business Administration in 2005.
On December 9, 1989, Chris married the love of his life, Dawn (Casady) Hoins. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and making memories. They were blessed with three children: Casady (Sara) Hoins, Cole (Jeanna) Hoins, and Allison (Tate) Newgard, and eight grandchildren who brought Chris immeasurable joy.
In 1995, Chris moved his family to Lakeville, Minnesota, where they made their home for the next 31 years. During the later years of his career as a Chief Financial Officer, he and Dawn also lived part-time in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2020-2021), and North Bethesda, Maryland (2024–2025). He officially retired in October of 2024.
Chris had a lifelong love of learning and adventure. His many hobbies included cycling, motorcycling, trap shooting, fishing, bowling, coaching baseball and hockey, playing softball, running races from 5Ks to half marathons, competing in sprint triathlons, home renovations, camping—from RV trips to the Boundary Waters—and spending time at the lake with his family.
A talent born out of necessity but refined into a lifelong hobby was his ability to fix just about anything. Whether it involved vehicles, plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, or home renovations, Chris approached every challenge with confidence, determination, and remarkable skill.
Chris's career took him around the world and provided opportunities for memorable family travel as well. His colleagues described him as intelligent, witty, thorough, a gifted teacher, and "the king of metaphors." Those same qualities defined him in his home life as well, where he taught, encouraged, and inspired those around him.
Chris had an extraordinary way of investing in the interests of the people he loved. He transformed the family backyard into whatever his children were passionate about at the time, whether it was a dirt bike track, hockey rink, batting cage, volleyball court, or badminton court. He taught himself to skate and play hockey as an adult so he could coach his sons. He also spent countless hours around the kitchen table teaching and guiding his children through schoolwork, career decisions, and many of life's biggest challenges. As his family grew, that same enthusiasm extended to his eight grandchildren, whose interests and adventures became some of his greatest joys. Chris loved being "Gampa" and the grandkids adored him and reacted to every interaction as if they were seeing a celebrity.
He will be remembered for his generosity, passion, work ethic, spontaneity, unwavering reliability, and deep commitment to providing the very best life possible for his family. No matter the hour or the circumstance, Chris could always be counted on to show up with a caring heart, a practical solution, and a willingness to help. His greatest legacy is the example he set through his steadfast love, selfless service, and determination to never give up on the people he loved.
Chris is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dawn Hoins; his children, Casady (Sara) Hoins and their children Mya, Addie, Zach, and Beckett; Cole (Jeanna) Hoins and their children Silas and Asher; and Allison (Tate) Newgard and their children Callahan and Faye. He is also survived by his brother, Corey Hoins; his stepmother, Vera Hoins; and his brother-in-law, John Liming.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jerome Hoins; his mother, Lyne Fobian; and his sister, Diane Liming.
The lessons Chris taught, the memories he created, and the love he poured into his family will continue to shape generations to come. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever present in the hearts of those who knew him.
