Donald L. MacKinnon, age 87, passed away on August 16, surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born on September 19, 1938, in Minneapolis, MN, to Donald C. and Aileen (Stimson) MacKinnon. He married Lois Darr on June 20, 1959, in Edina, MN.

Don and his wife, Lois, shared 67 years of marriage and built a life centered around family, hard work, good neighbors, and the simple things Don loved most.

Don was a talented car mechanic and a natural fixer who could seemingly repair just about anything. Don was self-employed for most of his life, owning and operating Texaco and Sinclair service stations, as well as Edina Wave Car Wash. He loved cars, working with his hands, and keeping an immaculate yard.

Don was always helping his neighbors with one project or another, shoveling or plowing snow, hauling black dirt or rock, or simply lending his skills. Don genuinely loved people. He always had time to stop and talk with a neighbor, share a story, offer a helping hand, or simply visit for a while. Many of his customers and employees became lifelong friends and kept in touch throughout the years. No one stayed a stranger for long.

Don also had a special place in his heart for all his dogs throughout the years. Most recently, Don could often be found enjoying scooter rides with his beloved dog, Riley, by his side.

Above all, Don was most proud of his family. He was a devoted husband to Lois and a proud father to Lori, David, and his late daughter, Kathy. His pride and joy continued with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After a lifetime of hard work, Don lived with chronic pain during the later years of his life. Even when his body made things more difficult, he remained determined to stay active and continued doing the things he loved for as long as he could.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Lawrence; parents, Donald and Aileen MacKinnon; brother, Tom MacKinnon; and sister, Joan Lundquist

Don is survived by his loving wife, Lois; children, Lori, and David MacKinnon; son-in- law, Harry Lawrence; grandchildren, Joe, Geoff, Charlie, Cole, and Abby; great-grandchildren; Amelia, Maisie, Violet, and Louie; as well as other extended family and friends.

A private service will be held at a later date.
