Gary Lee
Scott
Jan 27, 1939 — Aug 7, 2026
Burnsville
Gary Lee Scott
January 27, 1939-August 7, 2026
Age 87, of Burnsville, MN and Saint James City, FL passed away on August 7, 2026. As a
husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Gary will be greatly missed
by all whose lives he touched.
Gary was born in Santa Barbara, California, in 1939. He grew up all over the lower Midwest but
had a special fondness for Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school in Ringwood in
1957. At 18, he enlisted in the US Navy, advancing to the rank of Machinist's Mate, Senior Chief
during his 21 years of service. In 1960, he was serving aboard the USS Tarawa when it docked in
Rhode Island. It was there that Gary met and later married Marilyn Fitzgerald, and they were
blessed with three children. The ship was always special to him because of that, and for many
years, his personalized license plate was TARAWA.
In addition to the USS Tarawa, Gary served aboard the vessels USS Northampton, USS Boston,
and USS Okinawa. In 1970, he was stationed at Naval Air Station Midway Island. He cherished
the Midway Islands and the five years he spent there with his family for the rest of his life. It was
on Midway's short 9-hole golf course, with its unique albatross nests and gooney hazards, that
he began his lifelong passion for playing golf. Gary retired from military service in 1978, after
which he had a successful career as a realtor.
In retirement, he spent winters in Florida on Pine Island and summers at his home in Burnsville,
Minnesota. He remarried in 2014 and continued to enjoy his retired lifestyle. He loved spending
time with family and friends, golfing, boating, fishing, traveling, and playing cards and cribbage.
Golf with Gary was always an adventure that included a cart ride next to the out-of-bounds and
water hazards, hunting for treasured golf balls on the way to every hole. He was also the only
one in the family to score the elusive 29 hand in cribbage, which he did twice! At the end of his
life, Gary looked forward to seeing Jesus and reuniting with his loved ones in heaven.
Preceded in death by his first wife of 49 years, Marilyn; parents; stepmother; foster parents;
and three siblings. Survived by daughters Darlene (Rob) Schlottman and Wendy Scott; son Troy
(Kim) Scott; grandchildren Justin (Mariah) and Emma Scott, Noah, Cole, and Callie Schlottman,
Landon and Kailyn Scott; great-grandchildren Maisie and Oliver Scott; his second wife of 12
years, Judy, and her children and grandchildren, of whom Olivia, Clara, Waylon, and Sheldon knew
Gary as Grandpa; brothers Larry (Nora), Glen, and Lyle Muzingo, George Hopkins, Larry
Johnson, and Danny McClanahan; sisters Iris (Marion) Coy, Neva (Dan) Abbott, Jo (Bruce) Lear,
Leslie (John C.) Muzingo, and Donna Long; and numerous relatives and friends.
Gary wanted to be buried in a Hawaiian shirt, and he wanted his service to be a celebration of
his life. Attendees are welcome to dress in tropical or bright-colored clothing. Service will be on
Monday, August 31, at 11 AM, with visitation starting at 10 AM at White Funeral Home, 12804
Nicollet Ave, Burnsville. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery after the service.
