Obituary

Gary Stephens passed away at home surrounded by family on September 7, 2026, blessed with 85 years of a life well lived.
Gary was born on February 28, 1941, to Clarence and Evelyn Stephens in Iowa City, Iowa, as the oldest of six children.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jan Stephens; daughter Lana (Troy) Stuhr; son Kane Stephens; grandsons Adam (Nikki) Stuhr and Alex (Jillian) Stuhr; and great-grandsons Wyatt, Vernon, and Otis Stuhr, sister Joan Carmen, nieces, nephews, extended family and countless friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Merrill, William, Randy, and Ricky.

After graduating from Austin High School in Austin, Minnesota, in 1959, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served at Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego, California, and aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard until 1964. Following his naval service, he worked for Red Owl Foods in a variety of positions. He later became co-owner of GJ's Fine Foods, a chain of six grocery stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul. After selling his interest, he and Jan opened Stephens Market, a new concept store in Inver Grove Heights. Following his retirement from the grocery business, he served on the Board of Trustees for Catallia Mexican Foods for 17 years.

Gary enjoyed traveling around the world with Jan and their many friends. He also enjoyed sports, fishing, and reading. He had many friends and was a true friend to many.
Gary was a member of the American Legion Post 1776 in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Memorial donations may be made to the Legion.
