Obituary

In Loving Memory of Joseph Thomas Micek.

Joseph Thomas Micek, age 92, passed away peacefully on April 19th, 2026. He was a devoted husband to Shirley for 70 years and a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. Joe was born October 1st, 1933, in Minneapolis Minnesota to Frank and Merle (LeVoir) Micek. He was raised in NE Minneapolis with his 7 siblings. At age 16, Joe met the love of his life, his wife Shirley, at the Hollywood Theater in NE Minneapolis, where their love story first began. They married at Our Lady of Lourdes on his 22nd Birthday and together they raised 6 children. Joe served in the Air Force for 4 years.

He started his sales career as a milk man and a business forms salesman in Iowa before returning to his NE Minneapolis roots, that's where
he opened up Micek Realty, and had an office on Johnson Street for 24 years. Joe was a parishioner and usher at St. Charles Catholic Church and a member of the Johnson Street Association. Joe and Shirley always loved the North Shore of Lake Superior; they eventually built their dream home and enjoyed many years of beauty and peacefulness while living there.

He also opened his next real estate business, which was Lake Real Estate, and sold homes in that area for another 14 years. Joe always loved the open road – they traveled in their RV down to Florida every winter and eventually lived full time in their motorhome for many years. Joe was self-determined, independent, and spontaneous. His daily walks, regardless of weather, and his faith, kept him centered in life. Joe loved Shirley most of all, always saying he was the luckiest man in the world! They were inseparable.

He was preceded in death by his baby boy Micek, beloved wife Shirley, parents Frank and Merle, siblings Lois Centilli, Frank Micek Jr., Ed Micek Sr, Shirley Edholm and Barb Frost. In-law's, Sid Centilli, Ginnie Micek, Chuck Edholm, John Andrusko and Tom Ouellette. He is survived by his children Debbie Stephanson, Joe Micek Jr, (Janet), Gary Micek, Cathy Piilola, Diane (Stuart) Campbell, Ted (Heather) Micek, 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sisters Merle Andrusko and Judy Ouellette, sister-in-law Pat Micek and brother-in-law Dan Frost, and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to Johanna Shores Presbyterian Home for taking such good care of him during his last few months.
