Obituary

Lane Francis Esswein passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, at the age of 84.

Lane was born on March 21, 1942, in Boyceville, Wisconsin, to Elmer and Armourita "Rita" Esswein. He graduated from Boyceville High School and the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, where he majored in mathematics and was actively involved in numerous campus organizations, including serving as president of the Chess Club.

From an early age, Lane was known for his willingness to help others, serving as an Eagle Scout instructor. He later dedicated more than 40 years to the Minnesota Department of Education as a Data Systems Analyst. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet humility, and integrity.

Through mutual friends connected with the Zuhrah Shrine Temple, Lane met the love of his life, Carole. Their first date at a local supper club soon blossomed into a lifelong partnership. Together they shared 24 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Lane was a loving husband whose steadfast love, kindness, and quiet support were at the heart of their life together.

Lane's greatest joy was spending time with his family, whether sharing stories or offering words of wisdom. He was a constant source of encouragement and humor for his children and grandchildren, leaving them with memories they will cherish for a lifetime.

Service to others was one of the defining qualities of Lane's life. He devoted decades of volunteer service to both the Zuhrah Shrine Temple and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), where he formed countless friendships. Whether playing his horn with the Zuhrah Shrine Drum Corps or patrolling the flight line at AirVenture, Lane found genuine joy in serving others.

Outside of volunteering, Lane enjoyed fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and grouse hunting. He also had a lifelong love of music and played several instruments, including the trumpet, cornet, trombone, and ukulele. He had a passion for aviation, valued good company, and appreciated life's simple pleasures. Those who knew him will remember his quiet wit, kind heart, and unmistakable dry sense of humor.

Lane is survived by his loving wife, Carole; his daughters, Brenda (Chad) and Erin (Steve); his stepdaughter, Sue (Tim); his grandchildren, Brittany (John) and Jacquelyn (Cody); his step-grandchildren, Nathan (Amanda), Brandon, and Jordan; his great-granddaughter, Evelyn; his step-great-grandchildren, Madyson, Brantley, Remy, and Rhetten; his siblings, Carol, Bill, and Jim; and many extended family members, dear friends, and fellow volunteers whose lives were enriched by his kindness and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Armourita "Rita" Esswein.

In accordance with Lane's wishes, no formal services will be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children in Lane's memory. Lane proudly collected aluminum pop tabs for this organization for many years, and memorial gifts made in his honor would be a meaningful tribute to his lifelong spirit of service.
