Obituary

Marc St. James "Smitty" Smith, 56, of Minnesota, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service, strength, humor, and deep love for his family and friends.

Born on June 13, 1969, in Phoenix, Arizona, Marc grew into a man defined by dedication, intelligence, and quiet excellence. He proudly served more than 20 years in the United States Army, building a remarkable career that reflected both his sharp mind and unwavering determination. Beginning in field artillery and Airborne operations, he went on to serve as a military policeman, sniper, criminal investigator, polygraph examiner, and trainer. His service took him to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he carried out his duties with courage and professionalism. He received numerous awards and certificates during his military career, including the Bronze Star. While on active duty, he also earned his Master's degree - a testament to his relentless drive to learn, grow, and lead.

Throughout his years in uniform, Marc formed lifelong friendships with his military brothers and sisters. The bonds he built in service were unbreakable, grounded in shared sacrifice, loyalty, and deep mutual respect. Those friendships remained among the most meaningful relationships of his life.

Marc was incredibly smart and endlessly curious. He loved podcasts and learning about everything, and he had a gift for turning ordinary conversations into fascinating discussions. He was a natural storyteller - especially at the lake, one of his favorite places - where laughter came easily and stories only improved with time. He loved yard games, going to the gun range, and watching movies. He found joy in cooking and hosting, bringing people together around good food and conversation. If you were at his table, you were cared for.

Above all, Marc loved his family fiercely. He is survived by his wife, Jeri, his son, Kane (Hailey) Smith. His father, Thomas (Jaki) Smith, his sister, Michelle (Chris) Ong and brother, Kylin (Alyssa) Smith. Many cousins, nieces and nephews who will forever carry his stories, his lessons, and his love. He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda (David) Garcia, whom he cherished deeply.

Marc also quietly carried the weight of PTSD, along with anxiety and depression, as many veterans do. Despite his strength and accomplishments, these invisible wounds were heavy. His family hopes that by sharing this, others will understand that even the strongest among us can struggle - and that seeking help is a sign of courage, not weakness. Please, if you are hurting, reach out. Talk to someone. Seek support. Do not miss out on life. You are needed, and you are not alone.

"Smitty" will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his steady presence, his elaborate stories, and the way he showed up fully for the people he loved. His life was one of service - to his country, his family, and his friends - and his impact will endure far beyond his years.

Memorial Service will be held 12 PM Tuesday February 24, 2026 at the White Funeral Home, 14560 Pennock Ave, Apple Valley, MN (952-432-2001) with a gathering of family and friends starting at 11 AM. Interment to follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
