Apple Valley

Obituary

Margaret Balsam, age 77, of Apple Valley, MN passed away peacefully on January 14th, 2026 surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Bill Balsam; her parents, Walter and Doris Moreno; her sister, Monte Moreno; and her sister-in-law, Linda Moreno.

She is survived by her son, Brett (Maggie) Balsam; her stepchildren, Brooke (Tony) Shipp, Wade Balsam, and Wreford (Juliet) Balsam; her grandchildren, Alexandra and Kaitlin; her step-grandchildren, Alexis, Alyssa, Tristan, Keinan, Keller, and Kelsey; her great step-grandchildren, Sage, Jovi, Oscar, Olive, Magnolia, Ryder, and Bennett; her siblings, Allan Moreno, Mimi (Tim) Gallagher, Susan Moreno, and Edward (Cindy) Moreno; and other loving family and friends.

Margaret was born and raised in Miles City, Montana. A lifelong learner and gifted educator, she earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from the University of Montana in Missoula, followed by a master's degree in education from Hamline University. She began her career teaching sixth grade, and later second grade, where her love of learning and natural ability to connect with children quickly became evident.

After starting a family, Margaret devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother, a role she cherished. She later returned to education through Reading Recovery, working one-on-one with children who struggled to read. Helping students find confidence and joy in reading was one of her greatest sources of pride, and she loved seeing those children grow into capable, confident adults.

Above all else, Margaret was both a teacher and a mother at heart; brilliant, patient, and deeply invested in the success of others. She rarely missed a game or school event, always present on the sidelines, cheering on her children and celebrating their efforts.

Margaret found joy in simple pleasures. An avid reader, she also loved watching Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, as well as following her favorite Minnesota teams; the Twins and the Vikings. Known as a wonderful cook, she especially enjoyed hosting family and friends in her younger years. Those who knew her best will remember her as loyal, generous, and fair, guided by strong values of honesty and kindness.

Even in retirement, Margaret's love of teaching never faded. She continued tutoring children in reading, always devoted to helping others learn, grow, and believe in themselves.

Memorial Service will be held 11 AM Saturday May 2, 2026 at the White Funeral Home, 20134 Kenwood TR., Lakeville, MN (952-469-2723) with a gathering of family and friends starting at 10 AM. Interment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, MN.
