Marlene Beverly Moden Tollefson, born September 17, 1937, in La Crosse, Wisconsin, lived a life defined by quiet strength, enduring love, and deep devotion to her family. Raised by her loving parents, Gilmer and Doris Moden, she carried throughout her life the values of faith,
perseverance, and compassion that shaped her character and guided her relationships. Throughout her life, Marlene lived in many homes across Minnesota and Ohio, creating warm and welcoming households wherever she resided. Her primary hobby was sewing, a skill she
practiced with care and creativity.
She lovingly made clothes for her family and delighted in sewing special outfits for people and dolls, bringing joy to those around her through her handiwork. On May 27, 1961, Marlene married the love of her life, Darrel Tilmen Tollefson, beginning a partnership that would stand as a testament to loyalty and steadfast affection. Together they built a home grounded in mutual respect, shared purpose, and unwavering commitment. Their marriage was marked by a deep and lasting bond that sustained them through life's joys and challenges, and their love remained a constant source of strength for their family. Marlene was, above all, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was loving and attentive to all of her grandchildren, while being particularly attentive to her first grandchild, Bethany, who faced significant disabilities. Marlene offered patience, compassion, and steadfast care, ensuring that each of her grandchildren felt supported and cherished. A woman of faith and community, Marlene was active in her church, helping to organize many charitable and social events at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, Minnesota. Her dedication to service reflected her belief in caring for others and strengthening her community. Throughout her life, Marlene worked in a variety of occupations that reflected her adaptability and strong work ethic. She served as a telephone operator, became highly skilled as a sewing machine expert, and later worked as a Customer Service Representative at Farmers Insurance Company, where she was known for her reliability and friendly manner. Marlene passed away peacefully on April 28, 2026, at home with her husband, Darrel, by her
side.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 9:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. both at The Chapel in Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville, Minnesota. Lunch will be served at 11:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens in Burnsville, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilmer and Doris Moden; her granddaughter Bethany Santilli, her brother, David Modene; and his wife, Judy Modene. She is survived by her beloved husband, Darrel Tilmen Tollefson; her daughter, Jamie Santilli and husband Steven Santilli; her son, Daniel Tollefson and wife Brenda Tollefson; her grandchildren, Ashley Santilli and spouse Tom Sherman, Christopher Santilli, Samantha Tollefson, and Theo Tollefson; her brother, Gary Moden (Wife Mary Moden); her cousins, Randy (wife Sandy
Modene), and Mark (wife Johnna Modene); and many extended family members and dear friends who will continue to cherish her memory.
