Obituary

Willerscheidt, Phyllis A., age 91, beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.

Phyllis passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 29, 2026, surrounded by love. She was born in Platte, South Dakota, in December 1934. At the age of five, she moved with her family to St. Paul, Minnesota, though her heart always remained rooted in South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lillian; her sister, Constance; her brother, M. Eugene (Andriene); and her daughter-in-law, Cherie.

Phyllis is survived by her devoted husband and partner of 72 years, Anton (Tony); her children, Dr. Anton (Nancy), Debra (William), Mary Beth (Mike), Teresa, and Nancy Kay; her sister-in-law, Mary; several nieces and nephews; many beloved cousins and relatives in South Dakota; and her dear friend, Gretchen.

Her greatest joy was her family. Phyllis was a loving and proud grandmother to 15 Grandchildren, 25 Great-grandchildren, and two more on the way.

Her love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was boundless—an enduring presence of guidance, encouragement, and warmth. She celebrated their milestones, shared in their laughter, and left a legacy of strength, kindness, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire them for generations.

A lifelong learner, Phyllis began her collegiate journey at the University of St. Thomas when her youngest child entered first grade. She later earned her master's degree from the University of Minnesota, became a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, and continued pursuing her doctorate well into her 80s. Though she was unable to complete her dissertation, "The Effect of Social Media on Adolescent Girls Age 9–12," due to declining health, her intellectual curiosity and determination never waned.

Phyllis was a passionate and tireless advocate for women. Much of her work focused on supporting victims of domestic violence. In the early 1980s, she served within the Archdiocese as an advocate for survivors of clergy sexual misconduct. With courage and conviction, she used her voice to seek justice, recognition, and healing for those whose dignity and sense of agency had been profoundly violated.

Her commitment to women's advocacy continued through her leadership on the Archdiocesan Commission on Women and later the Bishop's Committee on Women, where she championed inclusive language and connected with women across the country. She was also deeply devoted to the Girl Scouts, believing strongly in the confidence and leadership it instilled in young women. She formed lasting friendships through her service locally as President in the 1980s, across Minnesota, and during her more than nine years on the National Girl Scout Board. These experiences brought her great pride and many cherished memories.

The Willerscheidt family extends heartfelt gratitude to her loving caregivers, especially Lori and Adak, for their compassionate and devoted care.
