Reynold James
Grothe
Feb 27, 1932 — May 7, 2025
Burnsville
Reynold James Grothe was born on February 27, 1932 to Siguard and Olga Grothe in Oaklee, MN where he spent his childhood on the family farm with his brother Gaylord who was ten years older. The family later moved to Thief River Falls, MN where he attended two years of high school before leaving to proudly serve his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. Following his discharge from the military he worked for the railroad building trestles and bridges.
On July 10, 1957 Reynold was united in marriage to Margaret Troland of Thief River Falls. Following their marriage the couple moved to the newly developing taconite town of Silver Bay, MN on the north shore of Lake Superior. There Reynold would work for Reserve Mining Company for over 30 years, and the couple would raise two children.
When the company was forced to close, the Grothe's first worked by providing janitorial services to their church: Sychar Lutheran. They located to the Minneapolis area to be closer to their children and worked together as condominium caretakers at River Place and later the York Apartments in Edina.
Upon retiring they returned to their beloved Silver Bay for several years before moving to White Bear Lake and finally Burnsville, MN. where Reynold resided until he passed away on May 7, 2025 at the age of 93.
He enjoyed horseshoes, shooting pool, woodworking, camping, CB radios, long walks and his 1932 Ford Model A. He could fix just about anything (automotive or otherwise) in his garage and shop. He spent many autumn days hunting ruffed grouse. He served his local steelworkers union by procuring and delivering bibles to the families of members who had passed away. He was a humble man, with simple tastes, who loved his family. And he loved his savior Jesus Christ with a childlike faith.
Reynold is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Margaret; children, Paul (Teri), and Lynn (Ray) Olson; 6 grandchildren, Alyssa (Nick) McDermott, Luke, Logan, Andrea, Jenna, and Ray; great Grandchildren, Raena and Brooks McDermott.
