Obituary

Good, Rita Joyce - Age 92 of Lakeville, passed away peacefully on February 27, 2022. Rita was born in Minneapolis to Timothy I. Madigan and Julia Gladys Walsh. She was a graduate of Washburn High School. Rita received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota, and later graduated from the Brown Institute of Broadcasting. At the university, she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, Orchesis Modern Dance Group, Masquers Theatre Guild, and KUOM Radio Guild. As a young graduate, she worked for television and radio stations, and was affiliated with WKLO, Louisville, KY, and WGN, Chicago. In 1959, she headed to Schweinfurt, Germany, where she worked as a Recreation Director for the US Armed Forces Special Service Clubs. It was there that she met and married her first husband, Edward J. Lyons, who was a captain in the U.S. Army. Rita and Ed had two sons. Military life had the family moving to various posts, and they lived in Oklahoma, South Dakota, and eventually Ed's home state of Pennsylvania. The family made Dallas, PA their home for over 35 years. Ed became the Chief of Police of Dallas Borough while Rita raised their sons and worked in the guidance office at Dallas Senior High School; a position that she enjoyed. Rita served the community and her church in many ways. She was the past president of the Dallas Junior Women's Club, the president of the Gate of Heaven Catholic Church Altar and Rosary Society, member of Gate of Heaven church choir; and involved herself in musical outreach to area nursing homes. The passing of Ed Sr. in 1988 brought a new chapter to Rita's life. She selflessly took care of her ailing parents in Bloomington, MN until 1992; when they passed only a week apart. Back home in PA, she continued serving her church and community. She married John "Jack" Good in 1998, and they continued to live in Dallas. Rita and Jack enjoyed their life together, especially their work with the 'Good-timers,' a music group they started as an outreach to the elderly. She met her match in Jack; as they both enjoyed singing and playing musical instruments. They enjoyed the company of Rita's grandchildren, who were young at the time, and who enjoyed making music. Rita's life took another turn when Jack died in 2006. A couple of years later, she moved back to her home state of Minnesota, where her son Ed and family lived. Although she left many dear friends in Pennsylvania, she was quick to make new ones in Minnesota. She became a parishioner of Risen Savior Catholic Church, Burnsville, MN. She was active in the church's music ministry for many years, both in choir and as a cantor. Rita was known for her bright Irish smile. Everyone who knew her found her to be a sweet and caring person. She loved her family; especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even until the end of her life, she had a passion for music. Spending time with her friends, traveling, and sketching were also things she enjoyed very much. Preceded in death by her parents and husbands; and by her brother, Robert I. Madigan; sister-in-law, Lucia Madigan; and nephew-in-law, Pat Phillips. Survived by sons, Edward T. Lyons (Jayne) of Lakeville, MN and Timothy E. Lyons (Karen) of North Wales, PA; grandchildren Chanel B. Lyons, Devon A. Lyons, Amyah J. Lyons, Matthew L. Lyons, Kaylyn E. Lyons, Brett P. Lyons, Matthew E. Lyons, and Shane T. Lyons; great-grandchildren, Beckett and Kinsley; nieces, Elaine Phillips and Terry (Keith) Watkins of Alabama and nephew, Thomas Madigan of Alabama; other close relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial 11:30 AM, Monday, March 7, 2022 at All Saints Catholic Church, Lakeville, MN. Visitation one hour prior. Private internment at a later date, Church of the Assumption Cemetery, Richfield, MN.
