In Loving Memory of Timothy "Tim" Garven
February 9, 1948 – November 30, 2025
Timothy "Tim" Garven was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 9, 1948, to Ernest and Mabel Garven. On November 30, 2025, at the age of 77, Tim passed away peacefully in Lakeville, Minnesota, surrounded by love. His life was marked by dedication, talent, humor, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
Tim grew up with a natural gift for athletics. What began with hockey soon expanded to football, baseball, and eventually speedskating. He excelled in nearly everything he touched—except, as he liked to joke, golf. At Edina High School, Tim was a standout student and athlete, earning recognition for his achievements both in the classroom and on the field. His academic and athletic excellence earned him a partial scholarship to Princeton University, a testament to his talent, intelligence, and determination.
After college, Tim explored various opportunities before joining his sisters in their family venture, Garven Inc. As Art Director, he created countless gift bag designs that found their way into the mass market. His artistic eye, creativity, and attention to detail left a lasting mark on the company and brought joy to many who received his designs.
Family was always at the center of Tim's life. He was tremendously proud of his four children (Casey, Cory, Bryan, Britta) and stepdaughter Diana
each of whom shared his drive and talent in academics, sports, dance, or the arts. Losing Britta at age 25 and Cory at age 42 brought profound sorrow to Tim's life; yet, even though the heartbreak, he remained strong, loving, and devoted to those around him.
Over the years, Tim faced multiple cancer diagnoses. With courage and determination, he fought each battle and overcame each challenge, time after time. Recently, Tim had a third recurrence of lung cancer, he continued to fight with remarkable strength. He enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and, shortly after, passed quietly and peacefully.
Tim is survived by his loving wife, Alyona Mallayeva; his sons Casey, and Bryan (Joann); his stepdaughter Diana (Andrey); and his cherished grandchildren Hayley, Jack, Henry, Francis, Eva, Ben, and Caleb. He is also survived by his sister Peggy (Jim), his brother Bob, and his mother-in-law Maria.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Britta, his son Cory, his parents Ernest and Mabel Garven, and his siblings Judy Rickel, Jane Prather, Renee Garven, and Tom Garven.
Tim's life was full of energy, generosity, and heart. His competitive spirit, humor, creativity, and deep love for his family will be remembered forever.
