Obituary

William "Bill" Jerome Holmbeck, 92, of Burnsville, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026, with his beloved wife of 64 years, Barbara, by his side.

Born June 10, 1933, to Carl and Esther (Kail) Holmbeck, Bill grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Monroe High School. At Monroe, Bill played football, hockey, and baseball, earning 9 varsity letters, and he was awarded the Blume Trophy for outstanding athletic ability, character, scholarship, and citizenship. He continued his academic and athletic pursuits at St. John's College in Collegeville, MN, lettering in hockey and baseball.

After a year at St. John's College, Bill requested active duty in the United States Navy Reserves, serving for two years during the Korean War.  Upon discharge from the Navy, Bill enrolled at the University of Minnesota, and graduated in 1954 earning a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.

After graduation, Bill was first employed by Audio Development Company (which later became ADC Inc.) working as a sales engineer, then sales manager, product development manager, and systems manager.  Bill left ADC Inc. to join Waynco, Inc., which was bought by Watlow Inc., where Bill worked as a sales engineer and enjoyed a successful career until his retirement in 1999.

Bill and Barbara were married October 7, 1961, and raised their family in Burnsville. Bill was active in his community and church. His civic involvement included work on Burnsville's Long Range Major Improvements Program, with specific responsibility for long range parks and programs.  Bill also coached youth hockey, baseball and softball teams for the Burnsville Athletic Club.  Bill served on the Building Committee for Messiah Lutheran Church, and was also on the Board of Elders and a Congregational President. In honor of their son Matthew's memory, Bill and Barbara gifted Messiah Lutheran Church with the cross that hangs behind the main altar.

After Bill's retirement, he and Barbara enjoyed travelling extensively, visiting countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. They also enjoyed spending winters in California to be nearer to their two grandchildren. Bill was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Matthew; his half brother Robert Holmbeck and wife Marilynn; and his brother-in-law, Richard Lange.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara; daughter, Signe Holmbeck; grandchildren, Ingrid and Walter Standifer; siblings, Al (Nancy), Tom (Patty), and Karen Lange; and many relatives and friends.
